Biography

(1916 - 2002)

Maniklal Banerjee received his art education from Government Art School, Kolkata and had the unique distinction of receiving first India Govt. Scholarship of Art. In 1839 he was appointed as a lecturer at the Government College of Arts & Crofts. Kolkata_ He served with great honour distinction and reverence imparting vast knowledge and expertise to his students. many are renowned artists today. He retired in 1977 and in 1979 he was a visiting professor at I.K.S Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh. Madhya Pradesh.

He was a member of selection and judging committees of Birla Academy of Art & Culture (1904 Academy of Fine Arts (1991), Rajya Charukala (19911 and All India Annual Exhibitions and other organizations.

His writings include articles and art reviews in the Modern Review, Anupjaan. Prabashi and Uttarshuri and publications include three sketch books in Bengali on Aesthetics. Akbar and Biker Nirakar. He produced a documentary film for Doordarshan, Kolkata.

Artist of unique individuality. he mostly painted on silk in watercolor portraying Indian Ideology Philosophical, Vedic, Tantrik and Rural India. There are more than 50 solo shows to his credit in India and abroad.
